what is scale?

Most people are familiar with scale build up within household appliances such as kettles and emersion heaters and are aware that scale build up reduces the effectiveness of such equipment. Therefore it is no surprise that the problems caused by scale are amplified in much larger systems and the treatment of scale is therefore a much higher priority.

Scale is the build-up of salts within water to a level that the salts become insoluble and form layers of scale above the surface of the water. When layers of scale form in water they act as a barrier which reduces the ability of heat to transfer between the system and the water.

The build-up of scale within heat exchange equipment can cause a multitude of problems. It is estimated that even 1mm of scale on the surface of your heat transfer system could increase energy bills by up to 25 per cent.

This is because scale increases the amount of heat and energy needed to transfer heat and increase the temperature of water to the required levels within a system. This extra energy and the extra strain it adds means that it ages at a much faster rate, requiring more repairs and replacement much sooner than expected. It also means immediate higher fuel costs are incurred. It is for this reason that we believe  effective scale treatment regimes can provide fantastic returns on investment for firms.

The method used to treat scale is dependent on the makeup of the water in the system and the use/design of the system. We also use the Langelier Calcium Carbonate Saturation Index as a guide to predict the levels of scale that we may find in individual systems.  Once we have established the individual needs and level of risk within a system we can treat the system for scale with the most appropriate of a variety of techniques using our expert knowledge and years of experience.

The different types of treatment that we commonly use include:

•  Scale Inhibitor Chemicals – we can advise on and provide a wide range of scale inhibitor chemicals to help fight scale within your system

•  Acid Dosing with Scale Inhibitors – acid dosing alongside scale inhibitors can improve the rate of scale protection in your system and we can provide you with the acids and inhibitors to do this. However, acid dosing can cause corrosive damage to certain systems and we would always recommend that you contact us before introducing this treatment so we can advise you on the best course of action.

•  Base Exchange Softening – the use of a Base Exchange plant in your system will lower the amount of scale forming minerals within your system and as a result reduce levels of scale.

•  Dealkalisation / Degassing plant – The use of a Dealkalisation plant in your system will reduce the number of impurities within the water supply and, as a result, reduce the level of scale.
